Mill Finish – The groundwork of surface finishes

Milling is a machining process that relies on rotary cutters. With each pass along the material's surface, the rotary cutters remove material from the workpiece, shaving off …

Face Mill Finishing Flute Count

I go with fewer flutes for finishing aluminum. My experience with face mills with >4 flutes (in 2" & 3" diameter) is that they have more of a tendency to put chips back onto the surface. I don't know the correct term, but it is as if the chips or dust get welded onto the surface when you are trying to skim cut and leave a mirror like finish.

How to achieve best "visual" surface finish on aluminum

I make my own product and some of the parts get anodized (red) and then laser marked. Trying to get the best surface finish on a shell milled surface. On a lathe I'd use diamond tooling or a larger radii and fine feed rate. I'm milling parts approximately 2" -4" wide using several face mills, all with somewhat marginal results.

Exploring the Characteristics of Mill Finish Aluminum

Difference Between Mill Finish Aluminum And Brushed Aluminum. A standard mill finish aluminum is often given a brushed finish. Brushed finishes are aesthetically sought after in architectural construction such as window panes or door locks, aluminum tubes, angle trims, etc. In the transportation industry with supporting rails in …

Selecting a Carbide End Mill for Aluminum Applications

For aluminum milling a two- or three-flute end mill works best because this allows for larger flute areas. A core diameter of slightly less than 50 percent of cutter diameter is optimum for the same reason. An open flute design is essential for easy chip movement away from the cutting zone. Surface finish on the flute is also critical. Long ...

Understanding Steel Mill Finish Options

Mill finish steel can be categorized into three main types: mill finish, brushed finish, and polished finish. Each of these finishes has its own unique characteristics and applications. Defining Mill, Brushed, and Polished Finishes. The mill finish is the most basic type of steel mill finish. It has a rough and untreated …

Stainless Steel Surface Finishes: The Ultimate Guide

Most melt mills are capable of producing all sheets and strip finishes. While some finishes (such as BA and polished) necessitate specific lines, most mills either have these or work with a third-party processing partner. Still, melt mills can only sometimes meet each customer's specific Ra (surface roughness) criteria.

A Cutting-Edge Technology for Hot Strip Mills

Finishing Mill Entry — When the transfer bar is transferred to the finishing mill (FM), it has to be centered. This is done to achieve a straight and centered threading of the finishing mill. After the start of rolling in the first finishing mill stand, the strip position can only be corrected slowly and with high force.

Mill Finish Aluminum vs. Clear Anodized Aluminum

Mill finish aluminum is the technical term for "raw" or unfinished aluminum material that does not undergo any treatment process. For extruded aluminum, that means the starting billets are heated and hydraulically pressed through a steel die to take their final shape before they're cut to length and shipped. It comes straight from the mill ...

On the hunt

IME the Harvey aluminum specific 5 fluters don't really leave any better finish than 3 flute Destiny Vipers run at the same feeds and speeds, but they are way stiffer when cutting deep! I also have some YG1 Alupower mills when I just need something to remove metal but think the Vipers are better in the long run.

Poor Mill Facing Finish with Insert Tooling

For a nice shiny finish you should use cermets at about 1200-1500 RPM (we use cermets for all of our finishing operations). As you've found depth of cut has almost no impact on surface finish (except for machine rigidity problems). We cut .003 to .010 deep on our finish passes on our manual mills as anything higher gives us …

I'd put new inserts in the 3", slow down to say, 3000 rpm and then work your way up from there. Decide the surface finish you want and feed it however fast gets you that finish. I'd also take a way smaller finish cut. I take .0005 to .010 finish cuts all time with cutters like you're using. Comes out shinny as fuck.
