How Lime is Made

While there are multiple kiln types in use, the rotary kiln is the most common kiln found in the U.S. A rotary kiln consists of a rotating cylinder that sits horizontal on an incline. Limestone is fed into the upper or "back end" of the kiln, while fuel and combustion air are fired into the lower or "front end" of the kiln.

According to Boynton (1980), the United States is by far the world's leader in rotary kiln lime production with about 88% of its commercial and about 70% of captive plant capacity provided by kilns. The conventional rotary lime kiln has a length-to-diameter ( L / D ) ratio in the 30–40 range with lengths of 75–500 ft (22.7–152.5 m) and ...

Oxy-fuel combustion as an alternative for increasing lime production …

The operation of a rotary lime kiln is modeled and simulated in order to compare conventional air combustion with oxy-fuel combustion processes. A layout from simulated kiln is shown in Fig. 1. The flue gases at the kiln exit are mixed with oxygen to produce the oxidizing gas. The oxidizing gas is injected through the back wall of the kiln.

11.17 Lime Manufacturing

The prevalent type of kiln is the rotary kiln, accounting for about 90 percent of all lime production in the United States. This kiln is a long, cylindrical, slightly inclined, refractory-lined furnace, through which the limestone and hot combustion gases pass countercurrently. Coal, oil, and natural gas may all be fired in rotary kilns.

Rotary Lime Kiln Operation

Today, a proper Rotary Lime Kiln Operation is an integral part of all modern pulp mills. How a Rotary Lime Kiln Works Kiln Feed and Feeders. High quality lime can be produced at a uniform rate only if the kiln is fed at a constant rate with lime sludge of constant composition. In some cases the feed to the kiln consists of a …

Rotary kilns account for 90% of lime production in the United States. A rotary kiln consists of a long, cylindrical, slightly inclined, refractory-lined furnace. The limestone and combustion gases pass through the kiln in a countercurrent flow. As the limestone moves down the kiln, the limestone is heated and slowly calcined into lime. The lime ...

Computer Simulation of Heat Transfer in a Rotary Lime Kiln

The kiln length predicted by the present model is 5.74 m as compared to 5.5 m of the pilot kiln used in the experimental study of Watkinson and Brimacombe (1982, Watkinson, A.P. and Brimacombe, J. K., "Limestone Calcination in a Rotary Kiln," Metallurgical Transactions B, Vol. 13B, pp. 369–378).

Decarbonising the lime industry: State-of-the-art

The thermal treatment of limestone (mainly CaCO 3) to produce lime (CaO) is a major contributor to CO 2 emissions and the literature on decarbonising the lime industry is scarce. Subsequent hydration of lime would lead to the synthesis of slaked/hydrated lime Ca(OH) 2; the production of a tonne of Ca(OH) 2 emits ∼1.2 tonnes of CO 2 arising …

Rotary Kilns vs. Rotary Dryers: What's the Difference?

The need for a rotary kiln or dryer depends on the process and material goals. If the goal is simply to dry the material, the rotary dryer is the equipment of choice. If trying to cause a thermally-driven chemical reaction, however, a rotary kiln is necessary. For more information on rotary dryers or kilns, contact us today!
