Herman Mine – Stamp Mill May 29, 2016 The stamps at the Herman Mine still stand tall as of our visit in May 2016 despite several forest fires sweeping the steep ravine below Deadwood Ridge.
In May 1882, he returned to Alaska with a five-stamp mill and formed the Alaska Mill and Mining Company. Operations indicated the deposit could be profitable if worked on a large scale. A 120-stamp mill replaced the experimental one in 1883 and in 1887 another 120 stamps were added.
They soon realized the gold trapped within these veins could produce thousands of ounces of gold and thus began hard rock or 'lode' mining. Stamps mills were an efficient way to crush the rock into powder and thus free even fine particles of gold. Stamp Mill manufactures went into production all over California funded by east coast old money.
